Life as a Zebra is delighted to announce our 2nd Annual Benefit at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing, Michigan, on April 13th, 2013.  Life as a Zebra Foundation is a non-profit organization that was founded to raise awareness and funds for various invisible illnesses.

Why “Life as a Zebra”? In medical school, students are taught to diagnose patients based on the condition that is most likely. This idea goes along with the saying: “When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.” The horses are the likely explanation, while the zebras are less likely. A medical zebra, then, is a person with a rare medical condition.

The proceeds that are raised at this year’s benefit concert will help support Vasculitis Foundation (VF), Ehlers-Danlos National Foundation (EDNF), National Dysautonomia Research Foundation (NDRF), and Life as a Zebra Foundation (LAAZF). Katie Dama Jaskolski, Life as a Zebra Foundation founder, strives to live each day to the fullest with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and dysautonomia. Allie Dama, Katie’s sister, almost lost her life in 2008 to PAN vasculitis. Allie is now in graduate school and her disease is currently in remission. Together, it is Allie and Katie’s mission to promote health advocacy, and to raise awareness and funds for these often invisible diseases. Last year, over 250 guests attended our first benefit, and we raised over $12,500 to support EDNF, NDRF, and VF.

We need your help to make the 2nd Annual Life as a Zebra Foundation Benefit Concert a success. By purchasing tickets to attend the event, donating money, providing silent auction items, or sponsoring the event, you will be making a tax deductible contribution that will help Life as a Zebra Foundation raise awareness and funds for these often overlooked, rare diseases.

The event will feature Bostonian singer-songwriter Chris Trapper, with opening act Joshua Davis Trio. Beer, wine, and hors d’oeuvres will be provided, and a cash bar will be available. All ages are welcome to attend.
