Boynton Beach/Southeast Florida Chapter
We have a membership of about 100 people and cover Dade County (Miami), Broward County (Fort Lauderdale), and Palm Beach County. Meetings are attended by about 20 of them.
We meet quarterly at two different locations. One delightful meeting was around the pool at the home of Julie Garton-Good, mother of deceased patient, Crystal Branch, who shared her memories of Crystal and things she learned that would help current patients.
Now we have two semi-permanent meeting places. One is in Aventura at the Aventura Hospital and Medical Center in nothern Dade County, courtesy of Bob Diamond, a hospital trustee and husband of patient Arlene Diamond. The other is in Delray Beach at the Ed Morse Toyota Dealership, courtesy of Renee La France, employee of the dealership and daughter of a deceased WG patient. Patients take turns bringing refreshments.
Hynda Gellman originated this group and Myrna took over at her request when she felt her health was interfering.
The group is friendly, compassionate, caring, and loving. We believe the attendees truly enjoy each other.
We have had doctors, nurses, disability lawyers, and caregiver organization representatives speak at various meetings. At some meetings we just exchange experiences and information without a speaker. Once we had a chronic illness workshop lead by my daughter, Carol, and me. We've been making ourselves available to do the workshop for other chapter meetings when they invite us or when we happen to be in a city other than our own. When we meet at the hospital, the hospital personnel we deal with to make arrangements for meetings get speakers for us. Other speakers have been obtained by our members.
We also attend the health fair sponsored by a local hospital annually and we were able to get a speaker from an organization also represented at the fair.
